Hey, you're the one coach told us about, Riley from Michigan, right?
―Val Ortiz to Riley Andersen

Valentina "Val" Ortiz is a character in Pixar's 2024 animated feature film Inside Out 2. She is a high school hockey player and the popular girl at camp who everyone, including Riley and her friends, looks up to.

History[]

Val Ortiz is a high school hockey player who Riley, and her friends, look up to. She joined the Fire Hawks in freshman year when she scored two goals at the scrimmage on the last day of Coach Roberts' hockey skills camp. Val is the captain of her team.

Val went to the camp and ran into Riley Andersen, whom she knew by reputation, though she mistakenly believed Riley was from Michigan. Instead of correcting her, Riley went along with this and pretended to be from Michigan. Riley complimented Val's hair, which was partially dyed red, and read out as if to touch it, but pulled back before she made contact. Val invited Riley to meet some of the other FireHawks, which Riley accepted. Val took Riley to the locker room and introduced her to some of the other players. When Val offered to let Riley sit with them, Riley said she was saving spots for her friends, Bree and Grace.

After Riley's goofing off with Bree and Grace led to the whole camp having to skate lines, Val and her friends talked about Riley, with Val defending her while the others complained about her immaturity, unaware that Riley could hear them. Once the others left, Riley came to Val and apologized for her behavior. Val said that coach was hard on Riley, but that was good because it meant she was on the coach's radar. Val said she was glad Riley came to talk to her and suggested they try to get on the same team. When the time came to split into teams, Riley chose to go to the team Val was on instead of being on a team with Bree and Grace.

The next morning, Val came to the ice early to practice only to find Riley already there practicing. Val was glad to see her because she'd stood up for Riley to the others. Riley asked Val about her freshman year on the FireHawks. Val said it was hard, but it was how she met all her friends. While talking, they both realized they were hungry. They wanted pizza, but Val offered Riley an energy bar, which she accepted.

At the end of the day, Coach Roberts sent them all to relax. Val invited Riley to join her and her friends. The others intimated Riley by telling her that everything coach thought of her was in her red notebook. Riley embarrassed herself by saying that her favorite band was Get Up and Glow, a band Val liked in middle school. Riley attempted to fix things by claiming she was being sarcastic.

As it got late, Val said they should call it a night. Val encouraged Riley to get some sleep because they had a scrimmage the next day. Scoring two goals at the scrimmage is how Val made the team as a freshman. Val said Riley would be fine and encouraged her to be herself.

The next morning, Val found Riley in the locker room, where she'd dyed part of her hair red like Val and the other FireHawks. She asked if Riley had gotten any sleep. Riley admitted she hadn't because of the anticipation of the game. During the game, Riley played very aggressively and ended up getting a penalty after knocking Grace over. After a panic attack, Riley was able to recover and rejoin the game.

Later, after the camp had ended, Riley sat with Val and the other FireHawks as she waited to hear if she'd made the team. Val reminded Riley that she could always try again the next year if she didn't make it.

Personality[]

Val shows leadership skills. She doesn't like putting pressure on other people. From the movie, you know Val likes practicing early in the camp. Val is also popular in the hockey camp, and has a nice sense of humor. She is also mature, and nonchalant. Val shows good sportsmanship and is easy to get along with.
