Plot[]
The lights come on at the hockey rink. The Zamboni runs over the ice.
Anger straightens his tie. Fear ties his bow tie. Disgust files her nails. Sadness cleans her glasses. Joy rubs her hands together in excitement.
Riley puts on her Foghorns uniform and steps out onto the ice with her team.
Joy acts as a sports announcer, talking about the game.
Riley high fives Bree Young and Grace Hsieh.
Mom and Dad stand on the sidelines and lead cheers.
Riley enters the face-off and gets control of the puck for her team.
Joy announces the other emotions. Anger makes Riley more aggressive in the game, leading to her scoring a goal. Fear is pleased that Riley is wearing her safety gear. He panics when he sees Riley about to run into another player. He says they need to get their mouth guard. Riley puts in a mouth guard, but realizes it's not hers. Disgust makes her spit it out. A referee calls a foul on Riley for tripping another player. Sadness cries over Riley's penalty. Riley goes into the penalty box, where she has two minutes for tripping.
Joy takes the time to catch everyone up. Riley is still exceptional.
Riley presents her parents with a meal, which is burned. Mom and Dad clap anyway.
Riley graduates and Dad takes her picture.
Riley helps a player from another team get up on the ice.
Riley gives some of her milk to a stray cat.
Riley blows out the candles on the cake for her 13th birthday.
Riley pulls down her favorite shirt, which she has outgrown.
The orthodontist finishes putting braces on Riley's teeth. When she moves, a rubber band snaps.
Riley's Islands of Personality are still going strong. The emotions look out onto Honesty Island, Hockey Island, Friendship Island, and Goofball Island. Disgust is glad that Boy Band Island has broken up, while Fear says Goofball Island is still around. Sadness wonders where Family Island is. Joy pulls out binoculars and shows Sadness that it's still there, just much smaller, only large enough to show a statue of Riley next to one of Mom and Dad. It's blocked by Friendship Island, which has grown much larger and has large heads shaped like Riley, Bree, and Grace.
Joy has realized that her memories aren't just making islands. They've also been making Beliefs. Joy plucks one that says, "Homework should be illegal."
Riley struggles with her homework.
Riley listens to music in the car and thinks Get Up and Glow is the best band ever.
Riley watches Grace, who is presenting to the class, while thinking about how she's a good friend. When Grace spills a jar of coins on the floor, Joy wants to help, while Disgust says Grace is a pariah. Fear then draws their attention to something forming behind them. It's Riley's Sense Of Self. Riley gets up from her seat and helps Grace pick up the coins. She says it's okay and she drops things all the time. She and Grace introduce themselves. Bree joins them and introduces herself as well.
Joy plucks one of the strings on Riley's Sense of Self and it expresses that she's a good person. Fear, Sadness, Disgust, and Anger are awed.
Riley takes some selfies with Grace and Bree.
Riley gets to go back into the game, which is tied 3-3. The emotions debate what Riley should do. Fear wants to use their slapshot, but Anger wants to charge the goal. Sadness points out that Grace hasn't scored yet. Joy looks at Riley's Sense of Self and says Riley has it. Riley tells her team to thread the needle. She gets them the puck and passes it to Grace, who hits it into the net, scoring a goal and winning the game. Riley, Bree, and Grace celebrate, as do Riley's emotions.
Riley, Grace, and Bree are celebrating as they exit the ice. Coach Roberts, the high school coach, congratulates them on their win and says the three of them were impressive. She offers them a flier for her three-day skills camp. She invites all the best players in the area and would love for them to come. Fear thinks they must be dreaming. Joy says if they impress Coach Roberts, she'll put all three of them on the team next year. Anger likes the idea of the FireHawks. Grace, Riley, and Bree all agree to go to the camp.
At home, Riley is working on her hockey stick when Mom and Dad come in. They're sure she'll do well and impress Coach Roberts. Riley says it's just hockey camp and they don't know what'll happen. Riley remembers getting penalized for tripping that other player. She worries about messing up at camp. Dad and Mom reassure her and Joy pulls the memory down. Mom and Dad tell her they're proud of her and Riley and Dad act like monkeys as they leave the room so Riley can go to bed.
Once Riley's asleep, Sadness laments Riley being so hard on herself. Joy says they can make everything easier. She shows off her Riley Protection System. It's for all the memories that belong in the Back of the Mind, like the penalty memory. It's weighing on Riley, so they're going to lighten her load. Joy puts the memory in the Riley Protection System and launches it to the back of Riley's mind. Sadness, Disgust, Fear, and Anger are impressed. They start sweeping for memories. Disgust finds one of Riley waving at a guy who was waving at someone else. Anger finds one of her forgetting someone's name. Joy takes the memories over and launches them. The remaining memories are sent to Long Term Memory. The emotions prepare to go to bed, but Joy looks again at Riley's Sense of Self. Sadness sees her holding a memory and asks if she's taking it where Sadness thinks she is. Joy invites Sadness to come along. She's the only one who hasn't been to the Belief System. Sadness says it's new and important. She doesn't want to mess it up in any way. Joy promises she won't hurt it and asks if she's ever steered Sadness wrong. Sadness says yes, many times. Joy opens the elevator to the Belief System and gestures for Sadness to get in.
Sadness is awed by the belief system, where memories float in a pool, forming strings that converge in the middle. Joy plucks one that says, "Mom and Dad are proud of me." Sadness plucks one that says, "I'm kind." Joy plucks several more, all of which have positive beliefs. She looks down at the memory of Riley celebrating with Bree and Grace after the game and puts it into the water. A belief forms from it that says, "I'm a winner."
Sadness, Joy, Anger, Fear, and Disgust all sleep in their beds. Joy wakes to a beeping sound. Sadness wakes next and asks what that is. They all walk into Headquarters, where a red light on the Control Console is flashing. It's the Puberty light. Suddenly, it starts flashing much faster, startling the emotions. They try to turn it off, but can't. Joy takes the light of the panel and puts it into the Riley Protection System, flinging it to the Back of the Mind. Suddenly, a large wrecking ball comes through the window. A group of mind workers comes in to clear everything out for Demo Day. Over the emotions' objections, the Mind Workers start making changes for puberty. They have to make room for the others. When Joy asks who the others are, the Mind Worker is annoyed they haven't arrived yet. The new Control Console is ready.
Dad calls for Riley to wake up, so the Mind Workers go on a lunch break. Joy says they can't leave everything like this, but the Mind Worker says they'll be back. Mom comes in to find Riley just sitting up in bed. She's upset that Riley hasn't packed yet. Anger has Riley yell at Mom for nagging. When Disgust calls Anger out for Riley's overreaction, Anger says he barely touched it. The Mind Workers broke the console. When Mom asks what's wrong, Sadness notes that she seems sad. She touches the console and Riley starts to cry and say she's the worst. Riley suddenly smells herself and Disgust steps in. Riley says she's too gross to go to camp or anywhere ever again. Disgust says the console is totally broken.
Mom's Anger says they knew this day would come. Her Sadness reminds everyone they promised not to make a big deal of it. Her Disgust notes that Riley really does stink. Sadness has them stick to the prepared script. Mom tells Riley she's not gross. She's just changing. She starts talking to Riley about butterflies. Inside Riley's head, Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Fear have constructed a pole that they are using to touch the console from a distance. Despite them being gentle, Riley yells at Mom to go away.
Mom's Anger says that's a preview of the next ten years.
Bree and Grace get in the car and hug Riley. Mom and Dad drive them to hockey camp.
Joy tells the others not to touch the console until they figure things out.
Dad tells Mom it's a big weekend for them and asks what she wants to do. She suggests chores that need to be done around the house. In the back seat, Riley is looking forward to next year. Coach Roberts' team has been the state champions every year. And Val Ortiz is the captain now. Anger says Riley's obsession with Val has gotten out of control. Disgust reminds him that Val made the FireHawks as a freshman. Sadness says that's really hard. Riley says all they have to do is be super awesome at the camp, then Coach Roberts will put them on the team and they'll be FireHawks. Disgust notices Grace and Bree giving Riley a look. She calls up a panel and analyzes the look. She wonders what they're hiding.
Inside Bree's head, her emotions notice that Riley has noticed the look.
In Grace's head, her emotions start to panic. Grace finally tells Riley that Coach Roberts isn't going to be their coach next year. Bree says they got assigned to a different high school. Riley tries to play it off as no big deal while her emotions go wild. Bree and Grace say they'll still get to hang out and the camp will give them one last time to play on the same team. They put their fists together to say they'll be friends forever. Grace and Bree look forward to getting to camp while Riley gets sullen. Sadness approaches the console, but the others hold her back.
They reach the camp and Mom and Dad let Riley, Grace, and Bree out of the car. Mom stops Riley and asks if Riley has everything, annoying Riley. Dad tells her to call them if she needs them. Mom reminds her not to forget her deodorant. Riley grabs her bag and stick from on top of the car and Mom and Dad leave. Sadness finally gets Riley to cry. Joy says it's okay because they need it. When Riley turns around, she sees a bunch of high school students. She looks around and finds Bree and Grace. Riley walks toward them, but runs into someone. She looks and sees it's Val Ortiz, who offers Riley a hand to get up. Joy tells everyone to act normal. Riley takes Val's hand, stands up, and admits she knows who Val is and knows that Val is the variety captain, set the all-time scoring record as a junior, and her favorite color is red. As she continues rambling, Disgust and Sadness both start to worry. Fear steps in and gets Riley to pull her hands back. Val knows about Riley because Coach Roberts told them about her. She thinks Riley is from Michigan, which angers Anger. Disgust won't let Riley correct it. Instead, Riley pretends to be from Michigan. Joy notices the console is orange and asks who made it orange. The others step aside to reveal Anxiety, who is touching the console.
The other emotions startle and hide behind Joy. Anxiety is a huge fan of Joy and is glad to meet her. Anxiety asks how she can help. Joy is overwhelmed by her enthusiasm and tells her just to stay in one place. Anxiety says they just have to call her name and she'll be there. Then she tells them she's Anxiety. She's one of Riley's new emotions and they're super excited to be there. She holds up her many bags and asks where she can put her things. Disgust asks what she means by "we." They watch as Envy pulls herself up on the console. She is immediately jealous of Disgust's hair, then Val's hair. She decides Riley needs hair like that. She makes Riley compliment the red in Val's hair and reach out to touch it. Disgust stops her before she makes contact. Riley says maybe when she makes the team, she can also join Team Redhead. Embarrassment hits the console and pulls his hoodie around himself. Riley's cheeks flush red. Anxiety introduces him to the others, saying he's not big on eye contact or talking, but he's a sweet guy. Joy welcomes him, but he backs away and covers his eyes when they conflict about how to come together. He ends up pulling his hood tighter and hiding against the floor. Val invites Riley to go with her to meet some of the other FireHawks. Anxiety says that's exciting, but they can't let her know they're excited. The console turns indigo and Riley nonchalantly says that sounds good. Anxiety says that was Ennui. Ennui is on a couch nearby, controlling the console with her phone. Joy decides to call her "Wee-wee," but she says no. She shows them how she can control the console from her phone using an app. Anger tries to confront Ennui, but Joy stops him. She says sometimes new emotions can feel unhelpful. She hugs Sadness as she explains that she's learned that every emotion is good for Riley, even Sadness.
Riley grabs her things and follows Val. Sadness reminds her about Grace and Bree, but Anxiety says they need new friends or they'll be totally alone in high school. She has Riley thank Val for showing her around. Joy asks Anxiety why she did that, leaving Riley's best friends behind. Joy thinks the next three days need to be about Bree and Grace. Anxiety says the next three days could determine the next four years of Riley's life. Joy doesn't agree. Anxiety says they all have jobs to do. Joy makes Riley happy. Sadness makes her sad. Fear protects her from the scary stuff she can see and Anxiety protects her from the scary things she can't see. She plans for the future. She shows the others the possible outcomes she's predicted and the consequences of each. Joy says Anxiety is being silly and none of those will actually happen. Nostalgia comes out and asks if they remember when they all finally came up to Headquarters. Ennui says that was thirty seconds ago. Anxiety pushes Nostalgia back through the door, saying she's not supposed to be there yet. She promises to keep Nostalgia in the loop until that time comes. Envy calls everyone's attention as Val leads Riley into the hold inner sanctum, the locker room. Riley is immediately intimated by the older girls. Disgust says Riley can't change in front of them, but Joy thinks it's fine. Val introduces Riley to the other FireHawks, saying Riley's from Michigan. Fear is worried that they're stuck with that. One of the girls asks where in Michigan she's from. Joy starts to think about cities in Michigan, but Anxiety cuts in and has her make something up. Val offers to let Riley sit with them. Joy says there's not enough room for Bree and Grace and wants Riley to sit on another bench that has more room.
Riley says she was going to save seats for her friends, but thanks Val, who is surprised. Anxiety worries it'll haunt them for the rest of their lives. Riley greets Bree and Grace as they enter the locker room. They take a selfie together. Coach Roberts comes in and tells them to settle in. Riley, Bree, and Grace keep taking selfies until Coach Roberts directly addresses them. She has all the girls put their cell phones into a tub. She says they're there to work, not goof around and asks if Riley understands. Embarrassment has Riley flush red and she answers yes to her becoming genuinely regretful and embarrassed, along with Val, Bree and Grace. Coach Roberts collects the phones. Anxiety tries to get Joy to let her take control, but Joy pushes her out of the way and has Riley laugh with her friends over Coach Roberts's strictness. Coach Roberts notices this and assigns the whole group drills. Everyone else (except Val, who gives them a sympathetic and apologetic look) blames Riley, Bree, and Grace.
Coach Roberts tells Riley she's lagging behind as everyone skates lines. She blows her whistle and tells them to take a break and she'll assign teams. Riley gets some water and overhears some other girls speaking negatively about her. Dani says there's no way Coach Roberts will put her on the team if she can't get it together. Val says Dani didn't exactly have things together when she was a freshman. Dani doesn't think she was as immature as Riley. Riley starts to breathe heavily as Embarrassment lies across the console. He can't reach a button on one side, so Sadness presses it for him. Riley starts to cry. Envy says they wanted people to talk about them, but not like this. Sadness wonders what they do now. Joy struggles to think of anything, but Anxiety produces an idea. If they can get Val on their side, everything will be great. Riley wipes her tears and goes to Val, who is now sitting alone. She apologizes for the whole team having to skate lines. She respects Coach Roberts. Joy tries to intervene as Anxiety has Riley continue, but Anxiety brushes her off. Val cuts off Riley's ranting and says coach was hard on Riley today, but that's not a bad thing. It means she's on her radar. Val is glad Riley came to talk to her and says they should try to be on the same team. The other emotions applaud Anxiety's work. Joy says Anxiety did great work, but Joy's ready to step back in. Anxiety says that was just part one of her plan. A good plan has many parts.
Coach Roberts divides the group into two teams. Grace and Bree are happy to have all three of them on the same team, but Val waves for Riley to join her team. Joy reminds Anxiety that Riley promised Bree and Grace. Anxiety reminds her they have to plan for the future and tries to have Riley join Val's team. When Riley hesitates, Joy gestures to her Sense of Self as the reason why. Anxiety goes over to it and breaks it off. Joy grabs it and puts it back, but Anxiety pulls it off again and launches it to the Back of the Mind using the Riley Protection System. Anxiety knows change is scary, but has Riley go to Val's team. Joy says that's not Riley. Anxiety says it's a better Riley. Envy says now Riley won't be alone next year. Anxiety says they'll build her a new Sense of Self, a better Riley. She grabs an anxious memory and tries to go to the Belief System, but Anger, Fear, Joy, Disgust, and Sadness step in front of the elevator. Anxiety apologizes and says she was looking forward to working with them. Embarrassment picks all five of them up and Anxiety says that Riley's life is more complex now and requires more sophisticated emotions. They aren't what she needs anymore. Joy says she can't just bottle them up, which she says is a good idea. She has Embarrassment put them in a jar and close the lid. Anxiety says it'll only be until Riley makes varsity, or maybe until she turns 18, or maybe forever. She sends them away and tells Riley they're going to change everything about her.
Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui enter the Belief System. Envy asks how they build a new Riley if it took thirteen years to build the old one. Anxiety says they're not starting from scratch and puts the anxious memory into the water, letting it form a new belief. Envy wants to plant a memory and Anxiety says she can do it next time. When plucked, the new belief says, "If I'm a FireHawk, I won't be alone."
A new Sense of Self begins to grow.
Mind Workers take the jarred emotions away to The Vault of Secrets. They ask where they're putting them and the Mind Workers say it's the same place where they keep all of Riley's secrets. They claim they're not secrets, but the Mind Workers don't buy it. Once they're locked in, Fear says they're suppressed emotions. Joy says Riley's going to be fine as she tries to lift Sadness up. They hear a voice say that's denial. It's Bloofy. He welcomes them. Joy and Disgust recognize him from a show Riley used to watch as a preschooler. He tells them that Riley secretly still likes the show. He sings a song from the show. Joy asks if he can help them get out. Bloofy asks a pretend audience if they can help find a way out. Anger questions who he's talking to. He says he's talking to his friends and asks if they see a key. He doesn't either. Lance Slashblade welcomes them to their eternal fate. Disgust swoons over him and Sadness remembers that he's a video game character. Disgust always thought Riley had a crush on him, but Joy never saw the appeal. Lance Slashblade longs to be a hero, but darkness haunts his past. Behind Lance, a Deep Dark Secret appears. Lance tells the emotions they don't want to know what the secret is. Joy tells them a rogue emotion has taken over Riley. She asks them to open the jar. Bloofy agrees to do it if they'll in turn get them out of The Vault, but Lance says the emotions' destiny isn't theirs to change. They've all been banished there. Disgust says that Lance doesn't deserve to be tossed away. Joy asks Disgust if she remembers Lance's power move.
Riley and Grace play a game together while Bree watches. Riley uses Lance's power move, which involves him rolling into a ball. Grace's player punches him out of the playing area.
Disgust tells Lance that no one is worthless and he needs to make his curse his gift. He says he'll see them free. He pulls out his sword, but then rolls into a ball which is unable to break the jar. Joy asks the Deep Dark Secret for help. He smashes the jar with his fist, freeing them. Bloofy looks to the audience and says it's their turn to help. His pouch has what they need to get out. He encourages the audience to call for Pouchy. Pouchy comes to life and Bloofy asks if he has anything they can use to escape. He offers them a tomato, a frog, or dynamite. Anger grabs the dynamite and uses it to break the door open. They run out and Bloofy tries to get them to sing a celebratory song. They say they don't have time. Lance thanks them and says he needs to leave. Sadness asks what about the Deep Dark Secret. Deep Dark Secret just goes back into the vault, closing the door behind him. Joy thinks that's probably for the best. Some Mind Worker Cops spot them and ask who let them out. Lance says since Disgust believed in him, he can believe in himself. He rolls toward the Mind Workers, who stop to watch. They laugh as he rolls past them and hits a mop bucket, starting a chain reaction that leads to the Mind Workers getting stuck in a vault themselves. Lance continues to roll away, saying goodbye as Disgust fawns over him.
As they go to leave, Anger splits off. Joy asks where he's going. He says he's going back to Headquarters to help Riley. Joy says Riley isn't in Headquarters. She's out there. They can't go back without Riley's Sense of Self. Fear is scared of going to the Back of the Mind. Sadness starts to ask how they'll do it when some Mind Worker Cops find them. As they run, Disgust asks if Joy has a plan. Fear bets that Anxiety would have a good plan. Joy says she has a plan. Anxiety's not the only one who can predict the future. She takes a minute to think and says they'll follow the Stream of Consciousness to the Back of the Mind. There, they'll find Riley's Sense of Self. Then they can put it back and Riley will be Riley again. Anger thinks that plan could actually work. Then Joy can tell Anxiety to stop worrying so much and they'll become best friends. Anger wants to punt Anxiety into the dump, but Joy says no. She says she and Sadness know where the Stream of Consciousness is because they've been there before. They run into a dead end. Sadness starts to cry over everything changing. Anger says they're lost, but Joy says you're never lost if you're having fun. The others aren't having any fun. They argue over what to do and then notice Riley's awake. Joy wonders why she's up so early. Joy leads them to find another way.
Riley's Sense of Self sits atop a pile of memories.
Riley skates around the ice.
Ennui asks why they're up so early. Anxiety says they need to speed things up, which means getting up early and practicing like never before. Envy says they're good at hockey, but the FireHawks are great.
Riley takes a shot and misses.
Anxiety says every time they miss, they skate a lap around the rink.
Riley misses several more shots, but then starts to make some. Val comes onto the ice and says she sees that she's not the only one who likes to start early.
Anxiety and Envy are glad that Riley and Val had the same idea.
Val is pleased because she stood up for Riley to the others.
Envy thinks things are going great, but Anxiety says they need Val to like them a lot. Envy says they should ask her a lot of questions because people like to talk about themselves.
Riley asks Val about her freshman year on the FireHawks. Val says it was a lot of work, but it's how she met her best friends. She says a few of them are going to hang out and order some food and invites Riley to join them.
Envy has Riley eagerly accept the invitation.
Just then, Coach Roberts comes onto the ice with the rest of the campers and tells them to warm up. Bree and Grace come up to Riley and say hi.
Envy doesn't want to share Val with Grace and Bree.
Val and Riley bond over wanting pizza.
Joy leads the other emotions to the Stream of Consciousness. Fear notices that it's full of food and realizes Riley must be hungry. Joy pulls over a slice of pizza for them to ride. Sadness doesn't get on, saying they can't take the tube back because someone at Headquarters has to recall them. Disgust realizes they'll be stranded. Joy says someone will have to crawl up the tube to get back to Headquarters to bring them back. Anger offers to do it, but Joy says not him. Fear is also not an option. Disgust also refuses. They all look at Sadness. Joy says she can do it. She knows the console better than anyone because she's read the manuals. Sadness tries to talk her way out of it, but Joy is insistent. They hear Mind Workers over a walkie talkie. Joy gives one to Sadness and sends her on her way with a pep talk. Sadness cries as she crawls through the tube.
Val offers Riley an energy bar.
Envy says they taste like cardboard, but Anxiety says they can't say no to Val. Anxiety leaves Envy in charge while she takes some memories. Envy is excited to be chosen, which Ennui doesn't understand.
Riley pretends to like the bar.
Joy sees the items in the Stream of Consciousness changing to things like broccoli and cardboard. Anger pulls a stalk of broccoli to the side and says they need to go because Riley needs them. Disgust is reluctant to get on. They start to move down the stream.
Anxiety adds some new memories into Riley's Belief System. She plucks one that says, "If I'm good at hockey, I'll have friends."
A new Sense of Self starts to grow as the old one sinks into a pile of memories.
Riley makes a goal and some of the others celebrate with her. Coach Roberts tells everyone they had a great day today. She sends them off to relax.
Anxiety is excited for party time.
Riley, Val, Dani, and Debbi stop to look through the window into Coach Roberts' office. Coach Roberts puts a red notebook on her desk. They tell her that everything Coach Roberts thinks about her is in that notebook. Val tells them to back off.
Envy wonders what Coach Roberts has written about Riley. Anxiety doesn't know, but wonders if it's bad. They run over the possibilities, mostly bad, and worry about them until Ennui informs them that the other girls have walked away, leaving Riley standing there alone.
Riley catches up with the other girls, but panics about how she looks when she walks. Envy and Anxiety argue over how to make Riley look natural. Ennui finally suggests Riley put her hands in her pockets. The other girls laugh and Anxiety and Envy wonder what they're laughing about. They don't know because they were too busy focusing on Riley's arms. Anxiety has Riley pretend to get the joke and laugh. The others look at Riley when she laughs and Embarrassment pulls his hood tighter and slams his head into the console.
Joy, Fear, Anger, and Disgust continue their trip. They argue about having to ride the broccoli. Fear thinks Anxiety would know everything about the trip. He doesn't like her words or actions, but feels like he could change her. Joy tries to improve morale.
One of the other players asks Riley who her favorite band is.
Anxiety notices that everyone is looking at Riley.
Riley says Get Up and Glow, a band Val liked in middle school.
Embarrassment collapses and Envy and Anxiety rush to think of a band the other girls will think is cool. They need to recall everything they know about music.
Sadness is sucked through the tube with some memories. Sadness gets dumped into Headquarters along with a pile of memories. The TripleDent Gum jingle starts to play. Anxiety sends Embarrassment to get it down. They look through the other memories as Sadness crawls out of the pile and hides.
Dani asks if Riley still likes Get Up and Glow.
Anxiety starts to panic over the choices. Ennui slinks off the couch and over to the console, where she takes control and has Riley say sarcastically that she loves Get Up and Glow.
This action opens a Sar-chasm in Riley's mind. Joy, Disgust, Fear, and Anger rush to jump off the broccoli before it can fall in. Joy jumps off just in time and ends up hanging from a cliff. Anger and Disgust have to pull her back up. Fear wonders what that is. A Mind Worker says it's a Sar-chasm and can be open for miles. He tells them to run for their lives. They hear an echo of Riley sarcastically saying Get Up and Glow is her favorite band. Joy is confused because Riley loves Get Up and Glow. Fear starts to panic because they can't follow the Stream of Consciousness. Joy points to some workers across the chasm and suggests asking them. They call for help, but the sar-chasm makes it sound sarcastic to them. The Mind Workers decide they're jerks and leave.
Bree and Grace hear Riley pretending not to like Get Up and Glow and question that. They just went to their concert, in fact, and had a great time. Ennui has Riley continue her sarcasm.
The Sar-chasm widens.
Joy says they just need to go the long way, which is the best way.
Riley sarcastically says it was the best night of her life. Grace and Bree decide to leave. Some music starts to play and Riley says it's the best band ever.
Anxiety says they'll have friends as long as they like what their friends like.
Val and the others decide to call it a night and get some sleep. Val suggests that Riley get some sleep as well because they have a scrimmage tomorrow. Coach Roberts always does it on the last day. Dani says that's how Val made the team as a freshman. She scored two goals, which no freshman had done before. Another girl says it's basically your trial for the next year. Val says Riley will be great and encourages her to be herself.
Anxiety is happy to hear that, because Riley could be a FireHawk tomorrow. Envy looks at the small Sense of Self and asks how Riley can be herself without her new self. Anxiety loads up some memories to take them down to the Belief System to help with that.
As Anxiety goes to add the new memories to the Belief System, she sees the broccoli floating.
Joy tries to keep Anger, Fear, and Disgust motivated as it takes longer than she planned to get through Riley's mind. They pass Forgetter Paula and Forgetter Bobby erasing old memories. Joy says she can find the way. She just needs a better view. She sees a lift nearby and runs to it. She can't get it to work the way she wants, so she gives up, but says everything is fine. Disgust just wants to walk back. Fear is in despair. Anger says nothing works since the puberty alarm went off. Anger says if Joy can't see all that, she's delusional. Joy explodes, saying of course she's delusional. It's so hard to remain positive when all they do is complain. She doesn't have all the answers and she's starting to think Anxiety is right. Riley doesn't need them as much as she needs her new emotions, which hurts. Anger says Joy has made mistakes and will make more, but she can't let that stop her. He takes the hose away from Forgetter Paula and Forgetter Bobby over their objections. Anger, Joy, Disgust, and Fear all hang on and then Anger puts it in reverse. It spits out memories and sends the emotions flying. They land on top of a shelf of memories. They can see the Back of the Mind in the distance. Anger pledges the emotions' support for Joy.
As Riley settles into her bed, Anxiety celebrates the FireHawks accepting them and Riley's growing Sense of Self. Envy agrees that tomorrow is everything, because Riley has to make the team. Anxiety thinks they need more help, but Ennui isn't paying attention and Embarrassment is busy reliving a memory. He hears something and investigates. He finds Sadness looking through the manuals, but doesn't tell Anxiety and Envy she's there. Instead, he piles more manuals to hide her. Back over at the console, Anxiety drinks multiple energy drinks in preparation for a long night.
Joy says they just need to cut through Imagination Land. She tells the others about all the areas, only to find that Imagination Land has changed. They see Mount Crushmore, featuring Jordan, Lance Slashblade, and two others. Disgust sees this and says Lance is the only one who matters. Joy then gets hit in the face with the Rumor Mill, which reports on gossip. Some Mind Workers distribute issues as the emotions read the rumors. Joy is glad to see Fort Pillowton is still standing. But it's larger and there's an orange light coming from inside. Joy leads the others inside. They see a room full of cubicles, each with Mind Workers. On a screen, Anxiety explains that they need to help Riley prepare for every possible outcome. The Mind Workers all draw options. Disgust realizes they're using Riley's imagination against her. Anxiety says if they don't make the team, Val and her friends won't like them anymore.
Riley tosses and turns, overwhelmed by anxious thoughts.
Joy steps up to an empty station and draws Riley scoring and everyone hugging her. Anxiety sees this and says she's not helping, unaware it's Joy. Disgust draws Riley painting her nails to match her jersey and everyone else copying her. Fear draws Riley wearing knee pads. Anger draws Riley giving flowers to the losing team. Anxiety sees these drawings and says they're not understanding the assignment. Embarrassment distracts Anxiety and sends Riley the thought of her scoring and everyone hugging herself. Anxiety asks who sent it and Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui all deny it. Anxiety suddenly realizes Joy must be behind this. She calls out to Joy. The other Mind Workers all look around. Joy's station is shut down and she tells the Mind Workers not to listen to Anxiety. She's trying to change Riley. Anxiety says she's doing all this so Riley can be happier, but Joy thinks Anxiety is just hurting her. She tries to get the Mind Workers on her side, but they don't go for it, except one who draws a cat. Anxiety puts out the idea that Riley could be better than Val and Val would hate her. Joy turns it around and says Val could respect her for it instead. Some more positive projections show up. Anxiety and Joy battle over Riley's thoughts. Disgust tries to bring Joy back down from her lofty dreams of Riley's success by reminding her of reality. Anger tells the Mind Workers they don't have to keep doing Anxiety's bidding. The Mind Workers rebel. They turn off the feed of Anxiety and start a pillow fight.
Riley finally falls asleep.
Some Mind Cops arrive and Joey, Disgust, Fear, and Anger flee.
Joy spots a Parade of Future Careers and they look for a balloon to grab. Pastry chefs are underpaid, art teachers are underappreciated, and Joy doesn't know what an ethnomusicologist does. They decide to grab a supreme court justice. It lifts them up.
Anxiety says without the projections, they won't be ready for tomorrow. Envy says Coach Roberts will either make Riley a FireHawk or doom her to friendlessness. Envy has the idea to retrieve the notebook to see what Coach thinks of Riley.
Riley wakes up suddenly. Anxiety pushes her to get up to go steal the notebook. Riley sneaks out of her room. Sadness sees this and radios Joy, who asks why Riley is awake again. Sadness tells her what Riley's doing. Joy tells Sadness she has to stop Anxiety.
Sadness tries to signal Embarrassment, but he brushes her off.
Riley goes to Coach Roberts' office. She sees the notebook on the desk. A flashlight beams through the window on the door once she's inside, but after a moment, whoever is holding it leaves. Riley goes to the desk.
Sadness sees Ennui's phone dangling from her hand.
Riley picks up the notebook, but then puts it back down as she starts to tear up. Anxiety sees the console change colors and knows it's Sadness's doing. When Anxiety calls Ennui, she is startled awake and starts to look around for her phone. They start to look around for Sadness. They knock over the manuals, but Sadness isn't behind them. Anxiety finally finds Sadness hiding in a bunk. Sadness defends her actions, saying this isn't who Riley is. Anxiety says it's about who Riley needs to be. She takes the phone and has Riley look through the notebook. Anxiety hangs Sadness above Headquarters in a bucket. Riley finds a note that says she's not ready yet. Anxiety worries that it's already been decided, but Envy reminds her they still have another day left. They need ideas to change the coach's mind.
Joy, Disgust, Fear, and Anger see ideas falling from the sky. It's a Brainstorm. Joy grabs some of the ideas and is horrified by their suggestions, such as hogging the puck and trash talking the other team.
Ideas fall into Headquarters.
Joy starts to break ideas to prevent them from getting to Riley until they get sucked into the storm.
Anxiety is upset because the ideas aren't good enough. They need more.
Joy continues to break ideas as Disgust, Anger, and Fear climb up to the balloon. They cling to it as they fly through the air. Disgust grabs an idea, but Anger and Fear have to grab her to keep her from flying away. They spot a larger idea and prepare to grab it. They hop on, but Joy tries to break it. The others tell her it's the only way out. She lets go of the rope and they fly out of the Brainstorm. They get stuck on the outside of a Recall Tube as the idea is sucked through.
Envy likes the big idea.
Joy, Disgust, Fear, and Anger slip off and fall. Fear has the others hold him and he deploys his parachute. They land safely and continue their journey to the Back of the Mind.
Riley's old Sense of Self continues sinking.
Anxiety says Coach is right that Riley isn't ready. But Riley's new Sense of Self is growing quickly and it's almost ready. Anxiety puts the idea into Riley's mind.
Riley enters the locker room. She takes a water bottle and dyes a small part of her hair red. Anxiety and Envy like it.
Riley goes back to the lockers to find Bree and Grace talking. They stop when they see her. Envy says they're just jealous. Ennui says they wouldn't know cool if it hit them in the face. Val comes in and is pleased to see Riley's hair. Riley says she knows she's not officially a FireHawk yet, but since they're on the same team, they should match. Val looks at Riley and asks if she got any sleep last night. Riley says she couldn't with the big game coming. Val is upset with the others for worrying Riley. Val tells Riley she's good and to get ready to score some goals. Anxiety reminds Envy that Val scored two goals in the scrimmage to get into the FireHawks. But three is better than two. Ennui wonders how Riley can score three goals. Anxiety says the New Riley will handle anything. The memory she has in her hands is the finishing touch for her new Sense of Self. She goes to the Belief System to add it.
Joy, Disgust, Anger, and Fear climb up. There are many memories there, more than Joy remembers sending. They start to climb the pile.
Anxiety adds the memory.
Joy finds the Sense of Self and digs it out. She sees that it's fading.
Anxiety returns to Headquarters to find Riley's new Sense of Self ready and active. It says, "I'm not good enough." Anxiety is shocked.
Riley experiences the thought as she steps onto the ice.
Joy, Fear, Anger, and Disgust also hear Riley saying she's not good enough.
Anxiety says it just means she knows there's room for self-improvement.
Joy radios to Sadness and tells her to bring them back.
Sadness is still stuck in the bucket, but she gets Embarrassment's attention. After a moment, he puts his hood down and frees Sadness while Anxiety isn't looking. Then he opens the Riley Protection System. Sadness approaches the console, but before she can touch it, Joy radios again, getting Anxiety's attention. Anxiety breaks the Riley Protection System.
Joy, Disgust, Fear, and Anger watch in horror as the Recall Tube above them, connected to the Riley Protection System, breaks. They are stranded without it. Joy takes Riley's old Sense of Self and walks away. Joy picks up the memory of Riley getting a penalty and another of Riley getting a bad grade. She looks through some other memories, but can't find what she's looking for. She wonders what she's missing. Disgust asks what they do now. Joy admits that she doesn't know how to stop Anxiety. Maybe they can't. Maybe this is just what happens when you grow up, you feel less joy. She knows that Riley will never be herself if they don't get her Sense of Self back to Headquarters quickly. Disgust asks how.
Riley and Grace face each other in the face-off. Grace tells Riley to have a good game and Riley says the same back. As the game starts, Anxiety takes control. A teammate calls for Riley to pass the puck, but Riley ignores her and goes for the goal herself, scoring. Anxiety lights the first goal light.
Disgust wonders how they can get Riley's Sense of Self back to Headquarters. Anger has an idea, but he doesn't like it. He calls for Pouchy and encourages the others to do the same. After a moment, Pouchy appears. Joy asks if he has something that can help them get back to Headquarters. He starts to offer them choices, but Anger says there's no time. He grabs Pouchy and fishes around inside him to look for something. He finds dynamite, but nothing that can help. Joy has an idea, but they're going to need a lot more dynamite. Anger digs back in to look for more.
Riley steals the puck from Dani and scores again, leaving her team bewildered. Anxiety says Dani might be a little mad, but they'll all forgive Riley when she makes the team. She just needs one more goal.
Joy's idea is to blow up the cliff and ride the bad memories back to Headquarters. Disgust asks how they keep the bad memories from forming bad beliefs. Joy doesn't know that. Despite this, Disgust, Anger, and Fear decide they're in. They push the plunger and ride the wave of bad memories.
Riley takes more shots at the goal, but misses. While going for another shot, she runs into Grace and knocks her over, sending her rolling onto the ice. Coach Roberts blows her whistle and sends Riley to the penalty box for two minutes. Coach Roberts and Bree then go check on Grace. Anxiety and Envy are horrified that Riley hurt Grace. Riley starts to breathe heavily as she goes toward the box. Anxiety works the panel, trying to fix this, but Riley's breathing gets more intense.
Joy struggles through the wave of memories. They all flood into Riley's Belief System and start to form beliefs.
Riley breathes even more heavily as Anxiety races around the console, trying to fix things. Riley grabs the front of her uniform. Embarrassment, Sadness, Envy, and Ennui go to Riley's new Sense of Self and try to pull it off. Grace notes Riley struggling as Joy, Fear, Anger, and Disgust enter Headquarters. They also help pull on the Sense of Self, but they can't get it free. Joy looks over and sees a blur of orange as Anxiety flits around the console. She walks toward it and enters the orange tornado. She tells a glitching Anxiety to stop. She says Anxiety doesn't get to choose who Riley is and needs to let her go. As soon as Anxiety lets go of the console, Joy grabs her and shoves her back. They're able to pull the new Sense of Self off and put the old one back. It activates and Anxiety apologizes. She says she was just trying to protect Riley, but knows they don't get to choose who Riley is. Joy remembers sending all the negative memories to the Back of the Mind.
In the Belief System, many new beliefs are forming.
A new Sense of Self is trying to form, but the old one is blocking it, so Joy removes it.The new Sense of Self quickly takes its place, saying things like, "I'm selfish," and, "I'm kind." Joy hugs the new Sense of Self and the other emotions join her. Riley is able to calm down. She looks up to see Bree and Grace checking on her. Riley says she's not okay. She was a jerk to them. She freaked out when they told her they were going to a different school. She understands if they don't want to be friends anymore, but she hopes they can forgive her someday. Bree and Grace think for a minute, then hold out their fists. Riley adds hers to the stack. Then they all hug. Grace tells Riley to come on because they have a game to finish. Sadness tells Joy that Riley wants her. Anxiety steps aside and Joy approaches the console, taking control again. Riley steps back onto the ice and rejoins the game.
Riley sits with Val, Dani, and the other FireHawks at lunch. Val asks how long she's going to stare at her phone. Riley is waiting for Coach Roberts to post the list. Joy says they have six minutes before the list is up. Anxiety starts to worry about what happens if Riley doesn't become a FireHawk and runs through a possible outcome. Joy reminds her that that's not what's happening right now and sends Anxiety to sit in her special chair. Joy says they can't control if Riley makes the team, but they can make sure Riley studies for her Spanish test tomorrow. The other emotions are glad Anxiety remembered because they didn't. Joy lets Envy pretend it was her idea. Anger has taken Pouchy to wear as his own. Pouchy has confetti to use if they make the team. Joy says they love Riley either way. Anger says there's confetti even if Riley doesn't make the team. Riley looks at her phone and gasps. It's not Coach Roberts. It's Grace and Bree, wishing her good luck with a silly selfie. Nostalgia comes in, talking about Bree and Grace, only to have the others stop her and send her away. She says she'll be downstairs if they need her. With three minutes left, Joy says she'll be okay. Embarrassment says yes, because she has them. Joy cheers him on and he hides himself. Val tells Riley there's always next year if she doesn't make the team this year. Anxiety says she loves Riley. Joy understands because everything about Riley is a beautiful piece of her that makes her who she is. And they love all of her, every messy piece. Riley looks at her phone and smiles.
Mom asks Riley how camp was. Joy wants to tell them everything, but the others argue. Ennui steps in to have Riley say nonchalantly that it was good. Mom's emotions are upset that after three days, all they get is that it was good. Anxiety wonders if the red in her hair is because Riley joined a gang. Dad's emotions, on the other hand, aren't bothered and just get back to the game they were watching.
Joy frees Deep Dark Secret from the vault. He reveals that the secret is that Riley burned a hole in the rug. Joy is surprised as she thought it was that Riley peed in the pool. Deep Dark Secret hears that and immediately shuts himself back in the Vault.

Production[]
When asked in June 2015, Inside Out director Pete Docter stated that there was "no sequel idea from me at this point," instead expressing interest in developing original projects for Pixar.[4] However, he mentioned plans to begin exploring concepts for a possible sequel in January 2016.[5] According to Pixar president Jim Morris that July, the company's commitment to several original films prevented sequels to any of Pixar's other films (including Inside Out) from being commissioned at that time.[6]
The sequel was officially announced at the D23 Expo in September 2022, with Amy Poehler (who was revealed to be returning as the voice of Joy) coming on stage to discuss the film. It was additionally announced that Docter (who was also in attendance at D23) would not be returning to direct the film, his position instead being filled by Kelsey Mann.[7] Subsequently, several outlets reported that neither Mindy Kaling nor Bill Hader would be reprising their roles (Disgust and Fear, respectively) from the first film, due to salary disputes.[8]
On November 9, 2023, Inside Out 2's first Teaser Trailer was released, showing us the start of puberty in Riley's Mind, as well as a new emotion, Anxiety. A poster of the movie was also released, showing us more new emotions. These are Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment.
Release[]
During the 2022 D23 Expo Presentation, it was announced that the film would be released on June 14, 2024.[9]
